Shouldering the Shuttle

A young woman came to see me at work a few days ago and I promised her that I would blog about the reason for her visit.   Her name is Elizabita and she is a tatter.

I owe Elizabita an apology, as I said I would show you her surprise right away, but as you have all heard, that day was a disaster!

What with the failing car, the tickets, the elevator fiasco, I was overloaded and wanted to rant about my misadventures.  This was the farthest thing from my mind.

Now,
I present the surprise.


Isn't this an amazing piece of tattoo artistry?  

 I love tatting   - which you know - and I have a tattoo - which you didn't know - but this is really an example of extreme!  It is quite large and covers about four inches of skin on E's back, between her shoulder-blades,  just under the middle of  her neck.  This is the mark of a truly committed tatter!

Thanks E, for coming in to see me and for sharing your love of tatting and tattoos with me!  I enjoyed your visit and now all of Tat-land who enters here can see your unique and very beautiful symbol of your love for the art of  tatting.

  1. Wow! Looking at the thumbnail of your picture on my blog, I thought you had gotten a new silver shuttle! Is this a new shuttle (tattoo) for Elizabita? It was VERY well done and It does show dedication to her art!

  3. How cool! I wonder what the tattoo artist said when she showed up with a tatting shuttle.

    Incidentally, I have a shuttle just like that that I got on eBay (only mine isn't usable because the ends have separated). Apparently it was quite a popular design in the 19th century.

    Ann, You are so right. It is really something in the flesh - so to speak! Very fine lines and great shading. Really talented work. This is one of the best tats of its kind that I have ever seen - and I see a lot of them at work.

  7. Wow! A tat of a tatting shuttle. That's not what I would have chosen if I got a tattoo, but it's cool nonetheless. Definitely dedication to ones art. And I thought having a tatting gauge tatted on ones finger dedicated...

  8. Ironicaly, it was the tattoo artist's idea! We had met at a crafting circle and she asked to buy some tatting from me, and I asked to buy a tatting tattoo, so we traded! Tat for Tatt! And as to the conversation starter, I have 100$ to give to the first random person to say what it is when they see it lol

  10. Strange when I have googled tatting in the past I got tattoos! So now I know the connection. What an interesting way of trading your tatting. Um I'm not brave enough to have one either Isdihara!

  15. LA ink was on TV last night and I was thinking about what tattoo I would want. I definitly wanted something to do with tatting but I never thought of a shuttle. Its lovely and the detail looks amazing. Sherry (celtic dreamweaver) has a tattoo of her tatted dragon.
